The Latvian Higher League (LVA1) or Optibet Virslīga is the top division of Latvia's football system. At the end of the 2022 season, the LVA1 teams listed below qualify for the following non-league play:

  • 2023 - 2024 UEFA Champions League - 1st Qualifying Round:
    • 1st place 2022 LVA1 team
  • 2023 - 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League - 1st Qualifying Round:
    • 2nd and 3rd place 2022 LVA1 teams

The winner of the 2022 Latvijas kauss (Latvian Football Cup), typically a LVA1 team, also receives a berth in the 1st Qualifying Round of the 2023 - 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League.

Season Format

During the 2022 LVA1 team plays Home-Away matches with the other 9 LVA1 teams twice for a total of 36 league matches per team. Table ranking ties are broken by (1) head-to-head points, (2) head to head goal difference, (3) goal difference, (4) goals scored, (5) Fairplay ranking, then (6) a playoff.

Relegation

At the end of the 2022 LVA1 season, the 10th place LVA1 team will be relegated to the LVA2, and the 9th place LVA1 team will enter into a Home-Away highest aggregate score wins Promotion/Relegation Playoff with the 2nd place LVA2 team. The Playoff winner plays in the 2023 LVA1, while the Playoff loser plays in the LVA2.
