Summary
Liga MX (MEX1) is the top level of league style football competition in Mexico. The MEX1 season is split into two championships, the 2019-2020 Torneo Apertura and the Torneo Clausura. The MEX1 teams listed below qualify for the following non-league play:
- 2021 CONCACAF Champions League (CNCFCL):
- 2019-2020 Torneo Apertura Liguilla champion and runner-up
- 2019-2020 Torneo Clausura Liguilla champion and runner-up
Veracruz was initally relegated to MEX2, but they paid a MXN$120 million fee to participate in the 2019-2020 Liga MX (MEX1). Lobos BUAP position in the Liga MX (MEX1) was purchased by FC Juárez. As a result of the purchase, for the purposes of the 2019-2020 MEX1 Relegation Table, stats from the 2018-2019 Liga MX (MEX1) for Lobos BUAP will be used by FC Juárez.
Due to COVID-19, the MEX1 Clausura season was cut short at 10 regular season matches per team. Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz was disaffiliated from MEX1 by the Mexican Footbal Federation following various financial problems and off-field incidents. Consequently, no club was relegated after the MEX1 Clausura. Furthermore, the 2019-2020 MEX1 Relegation Table was adjusted to remove points obtained from Wins/Draws associated with matches played against Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz in the MEX1 Apertura.

Season Format
Each MEX1 team plays Home-Away matches with the other 18 MEX1 teams once in the 2019-2020 Torneo Apertura (18 matches) and once in the 2020-2021 Torneo Clausura (18 matches) for a total of 36 league matches. At the end of each torneo, the top eight teams advance to the La Liguilla (the playoffs) to determine the torneo champion. Table ranking ties are broken by (1) goal difference, (2) goals scored, (3) head-to-head results between tied teams, (4) away goals scored, (5) highest relegation coefficient, then (6) Fairplay points.
Playoffs
At the end of each torneo, the top 8 MEX1 teams advance to a Home-Away highest aggregate score advances playoffs. The first round of these playoffs, the Quarterfinals, has the following matchups: 1st vs 8th, 2nd vs 7th, 3rd vs 6th and 4th vs 5th. The four advancing teams play in a Home-Away highest aggregate score advances Semifinals. The two Semifinal winners advance to the Finals with the winner becoming the torneo champion. All Torneo Finalists advance to the 2020-2021 CNCFCL.
Relegation
At the end of the 2019-2020 Torneo Clausura, the results from the 2019-2020 Toreno Apertura, the 2019-2020 Torneo Clausura and the two previous seasons are used to build the 2019-2020 MEX1 Relegation Table. The MEX1 team with the lowest "points per match" ratio is relegated to the MEX2. The MEX2 champion is promoted to the 2020-2021 MEX1 Torneo Apertura.
