The Latvian Higher League (LVA1) or Optibet Virslīga is the top division of Latvia's football system. At the end of the 2020 season, the LVA1 teams listed below qualify for the following non-league play:

2021 - 2022 UEFA Champions League - 1st Qualifying Round:
- 1st place 2020 LVA1 team
2021 - 2022 UEFA Europa League - 1st Qualifying Round:
- 2nd and 3rd place 2020 LVA1 teams

The winner of the 2020 Latvijas kauss (Latvian Football Cup), typically a LVA1 team, also receives a berth in the 1st Qualifying Round of the 2021 - 2022 UEFA Europa League.

Due to COVID-19, the LVA1 season was cut short to 27 regular season matches per team.

Season Format

During the 2020 LVA1 team plays Home-Away matches with the other 9 LVA1 teams twice for a total of 36 league matches. Table ranking ties are broken by (1) head-to-head points, (2) head to head goal difference, (3) goal difference, (4) goals scored, (5) Fairplay ranking, then (6) a playoff.

Relegation

At the end of the 2020 LVA1 season, the 9th place LVA1 team enters into a Home-Away highest aggregate score wins Promotion/Relegation Playoff with the 1st place LVA2 Promotion Group team. The Playoff winner plays in the 2021 LVA1, while the Playoff loser plays in the LVA2.
